Tongland Power Station is the largest of the Galloway hydro scheme’s electricity generation plants. The turbine house was built in the 1930s and offers an excellent example of early-modernist architecture applied to an industrial setting. Original features, such as the old control system, offer a glimpse into how the power station worked in the 1930s.
The station’s visitor centre was refurbished in 2010 and welcomes school groups for tours explaining electricity, the hydro scheme and the environment.
