Rapid response power plant proposal
Progress Power Station is a rapid response gas-fired power plant located at the Eye Airfield Industrial Estate in Suffolk. A subsidiary business of Drax Group, Progress Power Station supports the UK electricity network providing flexible generation to support wind and solar when they are not able to meet national electricity demand.
About Progress Power
Progress Power Station is located at Eye Airfield, a former World War II United States Air Force base
Progress Power Station, a Drax Group development project, helps support Great Britain’s energy security. It will be operational during periods of peak electricity demand and when intermittent renewable technologies are unable to produce the power required to keep the country running – for example when the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining. Progress Power is able to operate 1,500 hours a year and as such, will help the country to transition to a lower carbon economy. It has the capacity to generate enough instant electricity to power 150,000 households.
Progress Power Non Material Change application
Progress Power Limited has submitted a Non-Material Change (NMC) application to the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero to amend the Progress Power (Gas Fired Power Station) Order 2015 (as amended) (the ‘Order’).
The Order includes provision authorising the construction, operation and maintenance of a gas-fired generating station and its associated gas and electrical connections at Eye Business Park, Eye, Suffolk.
The NMC application seeks to make targeted amendments to the Order to align it with works that have been completed, to remove authorised works that are no longer required, and to clarify responsibility for certain elements of the scheme, without altering the nature or effects of the authorised development.
A copy of the NMC application and its accompanying documents are available for inspection, free of charge, via the Planning Inspectorate’s website or the below links. Any representations on the application must be received by the Planning Inspectorate by 11:59pm on 9 September 2026, using the details provided in the Regulation 6 Notice.
